This proud man was captain of an Arabian Dhow, trading out of Mombasa

This dhow captain is dressed in all his finery.

The dhow is a traditional sailing vessel originating in Arabia and India.

Our captain's ocean-going dhow, with a single lateen sail, would have travelled to Mogadishu (Somalia) and on to the Arabian Peninsula or Indian sub-continent, returning to Mombasa on the following monsoon winds.

It is uncertain as to the exact origins of the dhow but certainly these beautiful wooden ships have been sailing the Indian Ocean and Persian Gulf for about two thousand years.

Even today, many dhows make their hazardous journey still only using a sail.
